El Gibbor – The Mighty God (Isaiah 9: 6)

Posted on

El Gibbor – The Mighty God (Isaiah 9: 6). We’ve seen God as God Almighty – El Shaddai ) day 6 of this study), but God also calls himself El Gibbor, “The Mighty God”. In Isaiah 9: 6, a passage often heard at Christmastime, we read , “For unto us a Child is born; Unto us, a Son is given, and the government shall be upon His shoulder, and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace”.

“Gibbor”, translated “mighty”, means just that: strong and mighty. It also means powerful, as in a warrior or champion, and strong as in a valiant man. It’s a word used of a hunter, a hero, or a mighty king. And it’s the intensive form of the verb “gabar”, which means to be strong and to prevail.

“Gibbor” when translated as “mighty” is most often used in Scripture not of God but to describe “mighty men”, particularly in war. The full term used is often “mighty men of valour”. This is not to imply that God’s might is similar to or of the same degree as men’s might but rather to show that the God of the universe is an all-powerful, mighty warrior.

This is the same word used twice in Psalm 24:8, where David writes (beginning in v. 7), “Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be lifted up, ye everlasting doors, and the king of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle”.

But the beautiful truth is that for those who place their trust in Jesus, this mighty God of war is not one who fights against us but One Who fights for us. And He is simultaneously both a fierce champion and a profoundly loving Father.

We see this specifically in Zephaniah 3:17 “The Lord your God in your midst, the Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing”.

Picture a father cradling his small child after slaying every dragon, real or imagined-he’s defeated the enemy and now is singing is child to sleep. That’s a glimpse into the Mighty God we serve-El Gibbor- prevailing in battle, strong over every enemy, the victorious warrior and undefeated and undefeatable champion.
