Wonderful (Isaiah 9: 6)

Posted on

Wonderful (Isaiah 9: 6). The only time in Scipture the word “wonderful” is specifically used as a name of God is in Isaiah 9: 6 “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The might God, The everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.

The word translated “wonderful” is “pele”, which means “a miracle, a marvelous thing, a wonder”. It comes from the root word “pala”, whose meaning can include to separate or distinguish; to be or make great, difficult, or wonderful; to be marvelous. “Pala” is used in Scripture to mean things including “to be marvelous, wonderful, surpassing, extraordinary, separate by distinguishing action; to be beyond one’s power, difficult to understand.” (Source: BlueLetterBible.org)

In Psalm 113:5 the psalmist writes, “Who is like the Lord our God, Who has His seat on high”. In Jeremiah 10:6 we read, “None at all is like You, O Lord; You are great, and Your name is great in might.”

1 Samuel 2:2 says, “There is none holy  like the Lord, there is none besides You; there is no Rock like our God.” 1 Chronicles 7:20 says, “O Lord, there is none like You, nor is there any God beside You ….” Psalm 86: 8 says, “There is none like unto you among the gods, O Lord, neither are their works like unto Yours.”

And the list goes on.

God is not simply one among many; He is one above and beyond all. He is extraordinary, distinguished from all others, surpassing, and beyond out power of comprehension.

Yet it is this same God-this same Wonderful- who says, “I have loved your with an everlasting love” (Jeremiah 31:3)-who says, “Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know” (Jeremiah 33:3) who says, “Everyone who drinks this (physical, natural) water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

Such a promise and such a love, are truly beyond our comprehension-truly, Wonderful.
